Japan is actively developing concepts and projects for futuristic cities, including some with a spacefaring element. “Spaceport City” is a proposed transport hub designed to connect traditional transportation with commercial space travel, including research, business, and even entertainment related to space. Additionally, Toyota is building “Woven City,” a futuristic urban area focused on testing new technologies in mobility, robotics, and smart living.

The race is on in Japan to build a space elevator through open innovation. In Japan, concept for elevators are being developed and the finish line to the final frontier is within reach. A space elevator is an electric vehicle that drives up and down a tether between the ground and a satellite in orbit. Space elevators could be an alternative to rockets that consume massive amount of fuel and allow for more people to experience space at a lower cost.
