Genghis Khan Yoyotei Sapporo Main Branch (ジンギスカン 羊々亭 札幌本店-よよてー さっぽろ ほんてん) is a lamb barbecue dish. It topped the list as the best restaurant in Sapporo for foreigners. For a country that never had a large lamb-eating scene, this soul food was pioneered in Hokkaido when marinating lamb in an apple and onion sauce gained popularity. Genghis Khan is simple at first sight, with hidden depths, combining chewy mutton with the milder flavor of lamb. The restaurant uses fresh lamb or mutton, often sourced from Hokkaido, and expertly cut before cooking. 

Cuts such as sirloin, shoulder, and leg meat are complemented by the restaurant’s condiments of choice, such as the classic soy sauce and miso.  You can choose from tender, mild-flavored lamb or the deeper taste of mutton. This is served with a salty-sweet dipping sauce made with vegetables and fruits – apparently, the concept of dipping grilled meat into the sauce originated in Sapporo, while grilling meat marinated in the sauce came from Takikawa. Salt has also gained popularity in recent years for its ability to accentuate the flavor of meat. If it’s your first time visiting a particular restaurant, it’s worth asking the staff for tips on the best way to grill the meat.

Personal experience

Genghis Khan (lamb BBQ) at Sapporo Susukino was a first for me last February 2024, and I loved it. It is a unique and enjoyable experience, especially with the combination of grilled lamb and vegetables, often accompanied by a savory dipping sauce and local beer. The lively atmosphere of the restaurants, where you grill your own meat at the table, creates a social and interactive dining experience. It doesn’t get any better than munching on succulent cuts of meat and sharing. The price is affordable and not cheap.
